Top female performers, including 15 Grammy-nominated artists, are joining on Respond II, a two-CD compilation benefiting families affected by domestic violence. Respond II was produced by a grassroots group of volunteers so that all proceeds could be donated to nonprofit organizations.
The CDs feature special tracks and previously unreleased material from female performers ranging from Tanya Donnelly (The Breeders, Belly), Sleater-Kinney and Aimee Mann, to the legendary Joan Baez, bluegrass diva Dolly Parton, and world music chart-topper Bebel Gilberto. The ever-popular Indigo Girls and Sarah McLachlan, blues artists Odetta and Susan Tedeschi, and the gospel infused Sweet Honey In The Rock, plus a variety of other talented artists, complete the CD. The 32-song collection offers both well-known and up-and-coming artists performing alt country, bluegrass, grooving R&B, folk, punk, Latin pop, and indie rock.
This compilation is a follow-up to the acclaimed first Respond CD (Signature Sounds, 1999) that included Juliana Hatfield, Patty Larkin, Mary Lou Lord and 24 other artists, and generated more than $125,000 for RESPOND, Inc. An advocate of the cause and the project, the late Billboard Magazine Editor-in-Chief Timothy White, named Respond his favorite album of the year for 1999 and "one of the most important and courageous records of the decade." Respond II is dedicated to his memory.
